Overseas interest in Sol Rally Barbados surged to record levels in the first few weeks after on-line entries opened on Sunday, October 1. Within the first seven days, 32 International entries had been posted, eight of them from crews new to the Barbados Rally Club's (BRC) premier event, compared with totals of 21 and five for the equivalent period last year; by the end of October, the number had risen to 38, a total not reached until early February for this year's event.
Sol RB18 Chairman Mark Hamilton said: "If I'm honest, the organising team is in shock! The solid level of support for Sol Rally Barbados each year pays tribute to all of those volunteers involved in putting the event together . . . but there seems to be a real boom this year. Some of our repeat visitors only come every other year, and it seems that a lot of them will coincide for 2018 . . . and word of mouth also means those regulars are bringing newcomers with them."
Following a successful pilot programme in 2017, tour specialists Rally Travel (www.rallytravel.com) are again marketing the BRC's premier event to their loyal customer base of rally fans all over the world. Positive customer feedback - remarks such as "I'm hooked on Barbados" and "if you're thinking of doing it, it was magic!" from this year's visitors - prompted the UK company to include Sol RB for a second year as the only non-WRC offering in its calendar.
From small beginnings as the International All-Stage Rally in 1990, the BRC's premier event has grown into the Caribbean's biggest annual motor sport International and a keystone of the island's sports-tourism calendar; it contributes around Bds $4 million to the economy and accounts for more than 4,000 visitor nights each year. Sol RB, which will run from June 1 to 3,  is a tarmac rally of around 22 special stages run on the island's intricate network of public roads, with the previous weekend's (May 27) Flow King of the Hill "shakedown" over a roughly three-kilometre stage used to seed the running order for the main event.
Sol Rally Barbados and Flow King of the Hill are organised by the Barbados Rally Club, which celebrated its 60th Anniversary in 2017; Sol RB18 marks the 11th year of title sponsorship by the Sol Group, the CaribbeanÕs largest independent oil company, while communications provider Flow is sponsoring KotH for the third time.
