More than 60 crews for BRC Shakedown Stages

Sunday’s (April 28) BRC Shakedown Stages has attracted an entry of more than 60 crews, a record number for the season's first closed-road event of the Barbados Rally Club Driver’s & Class Championships. With eight overseas drivers flying into the island for some seat time on local roads ahead of BCIC Rally Barbados and 12 cars entered in the FIA R5 class – also a record for a National event – a thrilling day is in prospect.
  Seeded at number one in the running order of 64 crews published at last night’s (Thursday) Briefing Meeting at the Vaucluse Raceway in St Thomas is Dane Skeete in the Subaru Impreza WRC S12 in which he has twice won Rally Barbados. Snapping at his heels are the leading runners in the renamed Barbados Rally2 Championship, Jamaica’s Kyle Gregg (Ford Fiesta Rally2) and England’s Rob Swann, partnered for the first time in his Skoda Rally2 evo by Welsh co-driver Dylan Thomas.
  Other overseas visitors include Scotland’s Fraser Louden, who will compete in the WRC class in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo Proto, Jeff Panton from Jamaica, rallying in the island for the first time this year in his Fabia Rally2 evo, Paul Horton of the Turks & Caicos Rally Team (Citroen C3 Rally2) with three-time British Rally Champion Matt Edwards as co-driver and George Sherman of the United States (Fiesta Rally2).
  In a foretaste of what is to come in BCIC Rally Barbados, SuperModified 2 is the best-subscribed class with 13 entries, led by the BRC’s reigning 2wd and SM2 Champion Roger Mayers (Toyota WR Starlet) and brother Barry (Ford Fiesta), seeded at 12 and 15 respectively. New to the class in 2024 is last year’s Modified 1 Champion, Jamaica’s Horatio Brown in the ex-Stuart Maloney Citroen C2, while the return of former Champion Drivers Daryl Clarke (Suzuki Swift RS) and Rhett Watson (BMW M3) guarantees action.
  Reigning Champion Driver Ian Warren is taking break from motor sport to concentrate on family and business, so the door is wide open for a new Champion to emerge at the conclusion of the eight-round championship which starts at Bushy Park tomorrow (Saturday) with a Rallysprint run by the Vaucluse Raceway Motorsport Club (VRMSC).
  Sunday’s Shakedown Stages is scheduled to start at 10.30am, with Scrutineering from 8.00am in the Service Park at Haymans Plantation, St Peter. Nine stages are planned at two venues in the north which are popular with spectators and drivers alike: crews will first tackle a 3.6-kilometre stage between Lamberts to Luke Hill in St Lucy, alternating with French Village to Four Hills (3.7kms); after the lunchbreak, there will be three runs from Luke Hill to Lamberts, with French Village to Four Hills running in the same direction. The event is slated to finish by around 5.30pm, followed by a Prizegiving in the Haymans Market Building.
