Three tied for BRC Championship ahead of BCIC RB26
Two former Champion Drivers are among the three joint leaders of the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) overall points standings as teams prepare for First Citizens King of the Hill (May 24) and BCIC Rally Barbados 2026 (May 29-31), but there are new names rising up the order.
Edward Corbin and Neil Corbin, with five Champion Driver crowns between them, and Antigua’s Stewart Gordon are tied on 35 points, with class wins in the only two rounds so far, as the second part of the Motoring Club Barbados Inc’s (MCBI) Spring Blaze Double-Header in March was abandoned because of spectator safety concerns.
The overall title is based on points scored by drivers against their peers in each of 12 classes, with entries always higher for the Club’s two marquee events, which count for around one-third of the season’s total. There are also overseas entries in all but one class; visitors do not take championship points away from local drivers, but bragging rights are important, so competition will be hot right through the field.
Reigning Champion Edward Corbin, who also won the title in 2019 and 2022, leads the SuperModified 1 (SM1) class in his Daihatsu Charmant. Although his namesake and 2012/2020 Champion Neil competes in Modified 2 (M2) in a Toyota GT86 CS-R3, they frequently enjoy close battles on events and were separated by just 4secs at the end of last month’s Shakedown Stages, having swapped times all day.
Winner of the 2025 BimmaCup Caribbean Championship after many years in the category, Gordon’s first full season of Rally Club events was also last year, when he lost the Clubman 2 (C2) class by just two points.
Fourth and fifth in their Ford Fiesta Rally2s are Josh Read (32pts) and Jamaica’s Kyle Gregg (31pts), with a first and a second place each; they are also the top two in the 4wd Championship and the FIA R5 class, with former Champion Driver Jeff Panton of Jamaica third in both in another Fiesta Rally2.
Newcomer to 4wd this year, BimmaCup graduate Savio Walcott leads M4 in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX, tied in the overall standings on 31 points with record-holding four-time 2wd Champion Rhett Watson (BMW M3), leading the SM2 and 2wd standings.
Walcott’s closest challenger in M4 and fellow BimmaCup-to-Evo IX graduate David-Anthony Balgobin is equal eighth, tied on 30 points with Kyle Gill, leader of C1 in his Mitsubishi Colt. Logan Watson (Ford Escort MkII) completes the top 10 with 29 points, lying second to brother Rhett in SM2 and 2wd, with Nigel Reece (Toyota Starlet) third.
Joining Walcott among the new names making their mark are Jamar Haynes (Honda Civic), who leads M1, and Simon Tempro (BimmaCup), second to Gordon in C2.
